Longstanding and intense rivalry by Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders are involved in an NFL rivalry known as the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry. One of the NFL’s most acrimonious rivalries is that between the Chiefs and Raiders. The Chiefs and Raiders have played in the same division since the American Football League (AFL) was founded in 1960. Initially, this division was the AFL Western Conference, and after the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, it became the AFC West.
Why they Become Rivals
Chiefs Rivalry
When the Chf were still the Dallas Texans in 1960, the teams had their first meeting. In the team’s opening game in Oakland, the Texans defeated the Raiders 34–16, and in Dallas, the Raiders defeated the Texans 20–19.
It wasn’t until the Kansas City Athletics baseball team relocated to Oakland, California, in 1967 that the rivalry really took off. The expansion Kansas City Royals franchise was assigned to the same division as the Athletics in 1969.
First AFL NFL league
The Chfs squad from 1966 took part in the inaugural AFL-NFL World Championship Game, which became known as the Super Bowl. In 1968, the Chiefs and Raiders played each other in a playoff game to determine who would play the New York Jets for the AFL Championship. Both teams had identical 12-2 records. Raiders Beat the Chiefs
The Raiders defeated the Chf twice during the regular season the following year, 1969, and went on to win the AFL Western Conference championship. In the 1969 AFL Championship Game, which took place in Oakland, the Chiefs, the underdog, prevailed 17–7. The Chiefs participated in Super Bowl IV a week later and defeated the NFL’s heavily favored Minnesota Vikings. Oakland did not win their first Super Bowl triumph until 1976.
Taylor attacked Raiders
During the 1970 NFL season, the Chf and the newly amalgamated NFL met for the first time. With a 17-14 lead late in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs looked as like they could run out the clock. Chiefs wide receiver Otis Taylor attacked Raiders defensive end Ben Davidson after Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson rolled right and gained enough yardage for a first down. Dawson was hit by Davidson’s helmet as he hit the ground. Davidson and Taylor were expelled following a bench-clearing incident, and the penalties that were called at the moment rendered the first down void. It forced Kansas City to punt. After eight minutes, George Blanda of the Raiders capitalized with a 48-yard field goal.
Oakland won 20–6
The Chiefs’ tie proved to be costly, as Oakland won 20–6 at Oakland in Week 13 to win the AFC West for the first time. The NFL modified the rules in response to this incident, requiring Davidson’s personal foul to be called at the conclusion of the play and Taylor’s penalty to be called only after the Chiefs were granted a first down.
Raiders 42–10
In 1975, the Chiefs trounced the Raiders 42–10, and following each touchdown, the team’s live horse mascot, Warpaint, circled the field. John Madden, the Raiders coach, stated after the game, “We damn near killed their horse, but we couldn’t beat the Chiefs.”
The Raiders won two more Super Bowl titles in 1980 and 1983 while the Chiefs were considered to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. While the Chiefs were regarded as one of the weakest teams in the NFL, the Raiders won two more Super Bowl victories in 1980 and 1983.
Winning Super Bowl
In the 1970s and 1980s, the Raiders won the majority of their games. The Chiefs made it back to the postseason in 1971 after winning Super Bowl IV, but they were defeated by the Miami Dolphins in double overtime in the divisional round of that year’s NFL Final, which took place at Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium and was the longest game ever played. Third and final kickoff
At Kansas City, the Chiefs and Raiders played the 1999 season’s championship game. The Chiefs would advance to the postseason with a victory. The Chiefs’ mishandled special teams play throughout the game, which included three kickoff attempts by kickoff specialist Jon Baker that went out of bounds, allowed the Raiders to stay in the game and prevent the Chiefs from winning. After the third and final kickoff went out of bounds, former Chief Rich Gannon drove the Raiders into Chiefs territory, giving them favorable field position. This allowed the Raiders to set up the game-winning field goal and eliminated the Chiefs from the playoffs—their first victory at Arrowhead since 1988.
Oakland’s first win over Kansas City

In Kansas City, on September 14, 2008, the Raiders triumphed 23–8 against the Chiefs for the second consecutive game. Darren McFadden, a rookie, amassed 210 running yards and scored a touchdown. The Chiefs defeated the Raiders in Oakland on November 30, 2008, their sixth consecutive victory.
Chiefs 23–20 in overtime
For the third consecutive game, the Raiders defeated the Chiefs 13–10 in Kansas City on September 20, 2009. Among the few teams to fall short against JaMarcus Russell at quarterback were the Chiefs. The Chiefs won their eighth straight game in Oakland on November 15, 2009, when they defeated the Raiders 16–10 at Oakland Coliseum.
In a game that reignited the Chiefs-Raiders rivalry, the Raiders defeated the Chiefs 23–20 in overtime on November 7, 2010. It was the 102nd meeting between these teams overall and the 99th during the regular season. The Raiders completed an AFC West sweep on January 2, 2011, defeating the Chiefs 31-10 in Kansas City for the fourth time in a row.
Touchdown pass to Jason Witten
The first meeting between the two teams took place on Sunday Night Football in Las Vegas on November 22, 2020. Derek Carr gave the Raiders a 31-28 lead with a touchdown pass to Jason Witten with 1:07 remaining in the game. However, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to victory with a 75-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce with 28 seconds remaining, officially reigniting the rivalry between the two teams. The Raiders, who had been 6-3 going into this game, started a terrible late-season collapse as they would lose four of their final six games to conclude the season.
