In a tragic incident, an American woman claimed a man posing as an Uber driver tricked her and drove her to a motel in Miami, Florida, where she “woke up naked” with no memory of anything. How did she get there?
Danny Estalin Mourad-Avecilas, 49, now faces sexual assault charges, Miami city police said in a statement.
He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and fraudulent possession of an identification card. Police investigation revealed that he had also victimized other women.
The victim sustained physical injuries.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by CBS News Miami, the victim’s friend had booked an Uber ride for her from South Beach, Miami on January 12.
Despite dropping her off at an Airbnb, the accused drove her to Motel 77, more than 20 minutes away, the affidavit states.
In a video posted by local Fox affiliate WSVN, the victim can be heard saying, “He made me believe it was my Uber and said, ‘Get in the car, get in the car,’ and that’s it. ” “It looked just like the car I was waiting for.”
Mourad-Avesilas, believed to be a registered Uber driver, allegedly used the woman’s credit card to fill her car’s petrol tank as well as pay for accommodation.
The next day, the victim “woke up naked” with no recollection of how she got there or what had happened to her. Police said she may have been sexually abused.
The victim claimed in the court that she suffered physical injuries in the incident.
“I am physically injured. I don’t know what they did to me. I have bruises,” the woman said.
After discovering that $240 had been taken from her purse, she went to a nearby restaurant and tried to talk to the police.
Miami Police investigation and Uber statement
During the initial investigation, Miami police spoke with the victim’s companion, who warned her about getting into the wrong Uber, according to the affidavit.
According to the Miami Police Department, the investigation is focused on the driver who is accused of robbing, targeting women in the dark and possibly sexually assaulting them.
In a statement, Uber called the allegations against Mourad-Avesilas “tragic” and claimed they had revoked his license.
An Uber official said, “There are no words to describe this disgusting behavior.” “As soon as we were notified, we removed access to the driver and we are supporting law enforcement in their investigation.”
